Park Special Projects - Turf Installation

New artificial turf will be installed on several playing fields at Bicentennial Park and Bob Jones Park. City Council approved this project at their Oct. 17, 2023, meeting. Council approved this project for several reasons: for maintenance and drainage improvements on the fields getting the new turf and also for safety purposes. Weather permitting, the project is expected to be completed by spring 2024.

The addition of the artificial turf fields will allow the City to continue to expand on our offerings to our athletic association partners who provide opportunities for our youth to participate in youth baseball, softball and soccer.

Bob Jones Park

Bob Jones Park will have a little more work done, as four softball fields will receive artificial turf as well as replacing some of the fencing and the dugouts. In addition to that work, three multipurpose fields will be turfed as well. This graphic shows the four softball fields, fields 3, 4, 5 and 6, and multipurpose fields 4, 5 and 6 that will be turfed.

Who's doing the work?

The work will be completed by GeoSurfaces, Inc.  This company also recently installed artificial turf on the playground at Bicentennial Park. GeoSurfaces, Inc. has also had successful completion of similar projects for the Cities of Euless and Grapevine and other clients across the U.S. including Baylor University, Auburn University, Louisiana State University among others. The turf system that will be installed is the same system that has been installed on the Liverpool FC training field with positive feedback from the club's professional players.

Why turf?

This project is being completed in alignment with the Parks Recreation and Open Space Comprehensive Plan. Turf fields were outlined as improvements to maximize the use and flexibility of their use. They will also promote water conservation as irrigation will no longer be needed.

Artificial Turf also has many benefits, most specifically their durability. Turf fields are well-drained making them available for play almost year round. They have have lower maintenance costs than natural turn fields, as they do not require mowing, watering, or irrigation.
